Dear Colleagues:

Postdoctoral Research Associate in Polar Ocean Wave-Ice Interaction
Vacancy Reference: GF 2014000178
http://www.clarkson.edu/cee/; https://clarkson.peopleadmin.com/postings/2502
Closing date: September 28, 2015

A postdoc position is open immediately at Clarkson University, Potsdam, NY USA. The project is two-year long beginning Nov. 15, 2015 or as soon as possible thereafter.
Project description: Wave forecast models for dynamically changing ice-covered seas are needed. There are many identified physical processes that need to be implemented into these forecast models, and validated by field data. There are several ongoing field programs in the Arctic collecting detailed wave, oceanographic, and meteorological data together with in-situ and remotely sensed ice field data. A large international team has been assembled to conduct these programs. The project described here is part of these large programs. In this project, we use field and remote sensing data to validate and parameterize a theory that models ice covers as viscoelastic materials with varied material properties. We then implement this model into the global wave model WAVEWATCH III to evaluate its performance.

Required background: a PhD in an engineering or science discipline with any combination of the following expertise: physical oceanography; fluid mechanics; data analysis; applied mathematics
Required application materials: Letter of application; Resume; List of 3 references
