*Two Postdoctoral positions researching biological and physical
influences on the albedo of the Greenland Ice Sheet, as part of the
Black and Bloom project - **Geographical Sciences and Life Sciences*

The primary aim of this project is to determine the influence of
biological and inorganic material on the albedo of the Greenland ice
sheet (GrIS) and to model the impact of these factors on the present day
and future surface mass balance. Post 1 will be focused on the activity
and nature of the pigmented biomass, the changes in microbial biomass
during the melt season and the overall controls on biological activity
at the surface of the GrIS. Post 2 will be focused on utilising airborne
and satellite data, primarily MODIS, to characterise the spectral
properties of the ice and snow and to model the surface mass balance
using a regional climate model. There will be a fieldwork component for
both posts.

*_Post 1_*is a shared position between Glaciology and Life Sciences and
requires a background in microbial ecology or biogeochemistry. You
should have experience with biogeochemical analyses, laboratory and
field experimental work, and you must have good organisation skills. You
will be required to play an important role in the field campaigns in
Greenland, with commitments of at least six weeks in the field during
the summers of 2016, 2017 and 2018. Funding for Post 1 is available for
up to 42 months.

*_Post 2_*ideally requires a background in some aspect of environmental
science. You should have experience in the analysis, interpretation,
and visualisation of remote sensing datasets, such as MODIS, Landsat or
ASTER preferably applied to snow or ice. You must have good programming
skills. Some experience of numerical modelling would be advantageous.
There will also be a fieldwork component but not as much as for Post 1.
Funding for Post 2 is available for up to 48 months.

Informal enquires are welcome: For Post 1 please contact Professor
Alexandre Anesio and Dr. Marian Yallop, email:a.m.anesio at bristol.ac.uk

and the expected start date is January 1^st , 2016.
