The Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine
Research (AWI) is a member of the Helmholtz Association (HGF) and funded
by federal and state government. AWI focuses on polar and marine
research in a variety of disciplines such as biology, oceanography,
geology, geochemistry and geophysics thus allowing multidisciplinary
approaches to scientific goals.

The section *Physics of the Atmosphere* in *Potsdam*, Germany, invites
applications for a

*PostDoc position in climate modelling*
with a focus on the coupled atmosphere-ice-ocean Arctic climate system.

Description
To date, climate models have still deficits in the reproduction of the
observed accelerated Arctic sea-ice retreat. One of the reasons consists
in the insufficient representation of physical processes governing
air-ice-ocean interaction. This position is part of the project QUARCCS
“Quantifying Rapid Climate Change in the Arctic: Regional feedbacks and
large-scale impacts”
funded by the BMBF (German Federal Ministry of Education and Research)
within the Joint German-Russian Scientific and Technological
Cooperation. The project aims is to quantify the spatio-temporal
variability and trend in key Arctic atmospheric and sea ice variables
and to understand regional feedback mechanisms responsible for Arctic
climate change.

The candidate will analyze ensemble simulations of the coupled regional
Arctic climate model HIRHAM-NAOSIM, laterally driven by ERA-Interim data
from 1979 to present. The work will evaluate the simulated regional
patterns of atmospheric and sea ice thermodynamic and dynamic variables
and their seasonal and interannual variability and trends, with focus on
sea ice drift and related wind forcing. The work aims to interpret
observed trends and to distinguish between oceanic and atmospheric
drivers for sea ice changes, and to quantify contributions to Arctic
amplification. The candidate is encouraged to develop own related
research questions which fit into the project goal.

Requirements
The position requires a PhD degree in physics, meteorology, oceanography
or a related field. Experience in climate modelling and a good knowledge
in climate physics and dynamics with a focus on the atmosphere and/or
sea ice are required. Profound knowledge in scientific programming, and
skills in the programming language Fortran and Unix-like operating
systems are required. Good English language skills are expected. The
applicant is expected to disseminate results on international
conferences and in leading scientific journals.

For more information, please contact Dr. Annette Rinke
(Annette.Rinke at awi.de).

Employment is limited to 18 month. The *targeted starting date is
January 1st, 2018*. The salary will be paid in accordance with the
German Tarifvertrag des öffentlichen Dienstes (TVöD Bund), salary level
13. The place of employment will be Potsdam.

AWI aims to increase the number of women in the scientific staff and
therefore encourages women to apply. Disabled applicants will be given
preference when equal qualifications are present. The AWI fosters the
compatibility of work and family through various means. Because of our
engagement in the area of work-life compatibility we have been awarded
the certificate “Career and Family”.

Please forward your applications with the standard documentation (cover
letter with motivation, CV, publication record, and two references) by
*November 17, 2017* referencing *code 158/D/Kli-P* via email (all
documents merged into one PDF file) to: *personal.potsdam at awi.de*.
